Teresa Lisbon has made her decision. She's moving to Washington D.C. with Marcus Pike... but not quite yet.

On The Mentalist Season 6 Episode 22, when a cold case gets hot, Lisbon needs to stay in Austin a little longer than expected.

Will this give Patrick a little more time to sort out his feelings for his long-time partner and friend? Will he attempt to convince Teresa to stay? From the looks of these pictures, we'd say Jane's got his work cut out for him.

Check out these photos from the season finale "Blue Bird" scheduled to air Sunday, May 18th on CBS.

Lisbon was leaving Austin in a week and the only one who didn't know about it was Patrick Jane on The Mentalist Season 6 Episode 22.

Packing to Go
Lisbon must be packing to move to Washington D.C. with Marcus Pike. Is she really happy about making the move?

As a matter of fact, not only hadn't Lisbon told him, Jane was in complete denial, as evidenced by this The Mentalist quote

Oh LIsbon's not leaving. She likes to talk like she might but I don't think she's going anywhere.

Jane

He had convinced himself that she wouldn't go, which is probably why he put so little effort into stopping her. At least the realization that he was about to lose her prompted the quickest case closure in history.

The moment the letter showed up, I wondered if it was all a ploy from Jane, yet I couldn't be certain. But I knew it was the right combination of smart, sneaky and convoluted that it could be a plan of Patrick Jane's.

Jane appeared completely delighted by both their walk on the beach and Teresa's joy at cracking the code. His code. He'd obviously put a lot of thought into this plan, right down to wardrobe, as he'd picked three different dresses for Teresa to choose from for dinner.

It might be our last case together so how can anything be too nice.

Jane

All of that happiness and anticipation came crashing down when Lisbon found out that Jane had booked their suite days prior to the arrival of that letter.

She felt used and heartbroken and I couldn't blame her when she railed against Jane's lies and manipulations.

You don't give a damn about what I want or need. I am just a convenience for you. You use me. It's all about you.

Lisbon

Because that's always been her fear, that Jane doesn't care about her as much as she cares about him. When they were chasing Red John, she suspected she was simply a means to an end.

Now, Jane hides his feelings so well that she's convinced herself that her presence makes his life easier, more comfortable and that's why he doesn't want her to leave.

When Jane finally left her door, it looked as though he was rushing in to his room not to have a breakdown in the hallway.

As Lisbon got into the taxi, she called Pike to accept his proposal of marriage. I thought it was apt. He gave her one of the least romantic proposals possible when he said "What the hell. Will you marry me?" at the office. Answering him over the phone seemed equally unsentimental.

Despite an agreement to get married, I don't believe we've heard either one of them mention the word love.

In the middle of all of this. my love for Agent Abbott continued to grow. First, he approached Jane back in Austin.

You're acting cool about stuff I know you can't be cool with.

Abbott

Then, there was his sympathetic look when Lisbon threw the drink in Jane's face. He's Jane's boss. Jane lied to him and cost the agency money in a bogus investigation but Abbott simply looked somewhere between amused and sorry for Jane. Anger didn't play into it at all, and that was before an actual killer was arrested.

Even better was when he realized that Cho had no idea why Lisbon got so angry. It was as though Abbott couldn't imagine how such a smart investigator could be so blind to what was right in front of him.

I also found it amusing when Cho said that Jane and Lisbon were like brother and sister. I'll admit that that is how I felt the first couple of seasons, but by The Mentalist season 4, I could see their potential as a couple and it's only grown from there.

Some will say that Jane's frantic run to the airport and jump over the fence was out of character - but don't we all act in ways we normally wouldn't when we are desperate and in love? Patrick knew that this was his very last chance to say what he felt and he'd finally found the courage to do it.

The idea of letting anyone close to me is terrifying for obvious reasons but the truth Teresa is that I can't imagine waking up knowing that I won't see you. The truth is I love you.

Jane

Even if he lost her to Pike, at least he knew he'd gotten the words out, and that was something.

When the sun came up the next morning, Patrick was still being held by the TSA but little did he know how much brighter his day was about to become. He almost couldn't believe it when Teresa walked in and wanted to confirm that he'd meant what he said because she felt the same way. She loved him too.

As Jane leaned over the table to kiss her, the TSA agent yelled, "Quit that!" and I thought, not a chance. These two are just getting started. The Mentalist Season 7 can't get  here fast enough.

Patrick Jane was the last to know that Teresa Lisbon was leaving for Washington D.C. in a week on The Mentalist Season 6 Episode 22 which is probably why he hadn't been trying to change her mind.

But when a letter opening a high profile cold case turned up, Lisbon's transfer was put on hold as she and Jane tracked the lead to a romantic hotel on the beach. Unfortunately it didn't take long for Lisbon to figure out that it had all been a ruse. Jane had sent the letter himself because he didn't want to see her go. When his plan came to light, the whole thing backfired and Lisbon was furious.

She was so angry that she fled to the airport to catch the first flight to D.C. and marry Marcus Pike. When Jane realized he would lose her forever, he gave chase. Thwarting security, climbing a fence and bursting onto the plane Jane professed his love, even if it was too late. Then TSA officers dragged him away.

Still being held the next morning, Patrick was shocked to see Teresa come to his rescue and admit that she loved him too. In response, he leaned across the table and kissed her.

The Mentalist Round Table: "Blue Bird"

It was the what shipper's dreams are made of on The Mentalist Season 6 Episode 22, as Patrick Jane was finally honest about his feelings for Teresa Lisbon.

Of course, that was after all of his lies, schemes and manipulations didn't work.

Below, TV Fanatics Robin Harry and Christine Orlando are joined by The Mentalist fans from Twitter @Nerwen_Aldarion and @SteeleSimz to discuss surprises, disappointments and favorite scenes from The Mentalist season 6 finale.

The Mentalist Round Table

Were you surprised that Lisbon didn't tell Jane she was leaving?

Robin: Yes and no. I was surprised that she let him find out through the grapevine and that really hurt him, but I can understand the avoidance aspect of her actions.

Nerwen_Aldarion:  No, she dragged her feet telling him about Pike's offer, of course she would do the same here. She also wanted to give him more time to try and get her to stay since it is obvious she really didn't want to go. Of course Jane would miss all of THOSE signals.

SteeleSimz:  No, I wasn't surprised as she stated in the show it was hard. They have such a history together that telling him that she was leaving would have been hard for her. I think keeping it from him was her way of trying to tell herself that she was okay with leaving him. Also I think it is always hard to tell those you are closest with the truth because you don't want to hurt them.

Christine:  A little. I understand that it's hard but she only had one week left and everyone in the office seemed to know. I suppose she thought that if she put it off long enough he'd find out on his own and that's exactly how it played out.

Jane really didn't think Lisbon would go to D.C.? Why?

Robin: I think it comes down to a running motif this season - Jane taking for granted that he knows Lisbon. Jane's got blinders on when it comes to Lisbon, and recently he's consistently misread her intentions and underestimated the strength of her will.

Nerwen_Aldarion:  In this regard I think Jane is a little selfish, he simply couldn't fathom that she would leave HIM. Partly because I'm sure he knew she had feelings for him but also because he had been taking her for granted until now. Like she said in the episode "I'm a convenience for you" She'd always been there for him, he just assumed she always would...silly man. He didn't realize that she needs more than just his dazzling smile to keep her.

SteeleSimz:  I don't think he wanted to believe that she would move on without him. He has always done the running away and when he returned she was there for him. In this case he was the one being left and he deep down believe that she wouldn't leave him because she hadn't left him all the other times. I also believe deep down Jane already knew that Lisbon wasn't in love with Pike and that she was just doing this to prove a point to Jane.

Christine: Denial. Lisbon has always been there for him, whether to help him with Red John or bail him out when things didn't go according to plan. And even if it did take some prodding, she followed him to Austin and the FBI. He really never expected her to leave and I think there was a part of Lisbon that knew it and wanted to prove him wrong. That she wasn't as predictable as he believed.

Abbott saw romance where Cho saw a brother/sister relationship. Which side did you agree with?

Robin: I think that whole conversation was Heller & Co's way of paying respect to the fans who have been debating both sides of the coin for the past year! I'd say we've seen both over the course of the series. For at least the first 4 seasons, Jane and Lisbon were strictly, wonderfully platonic, and I would have cried bloody murder if they tried to put them together then. However, around The Mentalist Season 5, their relationship subtly started to evolve to get us to this point, and it did so quite naturally.

Nerwen_Aldarion: Abbott of course! I'm SHOCKED Cho saw them that way and have to wonder if it was a bit of tongue in cheek to the anti-shippers in the fandom. They always claimed there was a brother/sister relationship but I have a brother, he has NEVER told me that "emeralds look lovely with your eyes", has NEVER teased about seducing me over dinner, has NEVER suggested that he could read my dirty thoughts and then grinned while I blushed...and that was all in season 1! It was there from the beginning, the flirtation and then eventually the deep abiding love. I think it was planned too, but people will see what they want to see sometimes.

SteeleSimz: I agree with Abbott. I was sort of surprised that Cho didn't know it since he has been around them for so long but it was nice change to show that Cho doesn't always see things. I loved that Abbott ordered wine and then poured Cho a glass after Cho admits that he wasn't sure why this bugged Lisbon more than Jane burying someone alive.

Christine: I have to say that I didn't see more than a platonic relationship for at least the first three seasons. Around The Mentalist Season 4 things slowly began to change in a very organic way. By the time Red John was killed, I was rooting for these two to become a couple so I'm thrilled we've finally gotten there.

Packing to Go
Lisbon must be packing to move to Washington D.C. with Marcus Pike. Is she really happy about making the move?

Did you know the letter was Jane's elaborate plan?

Robin: I knew it from the get-go. As soon as they said all transfers were cancelled, I knew Jane was behind it, and was just waiting for that bomb to go off.

Nerwen_Aldarion: Not at first but when Lisbon "solved" the puzzle I realized it was a ruse, no way Jane wouldn't solve it first and then it all came together way too nicely. I shouldn't have been as surprised as I was though, this is Patrick Jane we are talking about.

SteeleSimz: Not at first but about the time Lisbon solved it on the beach I knew it was a plan. Considering Jane acted like he couldn't figure it out and even Lisbon said that if he "Can't figure out she can't figure it out" I knew that he had written the letter in order to get her to work the case. I do think it is brilliant and would have worked completely if Lisbon hadn't asked about the robe.

Christine: The thought crossed my mind in the beginning but I didn't know until Lisbon solved the clue while walking on the beach. Jane looked so happy with himself that she was having fun and that his plan was working.

Was Lisbon right to be furious at Jane?

Robin: Absolutely. I understood everything she felt; being used, being taken for granted, being deceived yet again.  He did what we know she hates - made her the subject of a con.

Nerwen_Aldarion: Does a bear sh*t in the woods? The guy faked evidence (AGAIN) and ruined her plans but not with any honesty but rather more tricks. I wish she'd punched him!

SteeleSimz: Oh, yes of course. Once again he used her, lied to her, con her all to benefit himself. She finally told him what I had been waiting for her to tell him. The whole scene of them speaking through the door was perfect, the acting, the emotions, all of it was what needed to be said after so many seasons.

Christine: Oh yeah. Jane did everything that she hates. He lied to her, patronized her by letting her crack the code, and conned her. Since he didn't share his true feelings, it all made him come off like a selfish jerk who simply didn't want to be inconvenience by her departure. Something would be wrong with Lisbon if she weren't furious.

Some fans think that Jane's desperate run to the plane was out of character. Do you agree?

Robin: I do agree, but would argue that was the whole point of that scene, and what made it brilliant. While it's certainly not out of character for Jane to take extreme measures to get something done, it WAS out of character for him to do so outside of a con or manipulation.

This was a turning point for his character. It would have meant nothing if the end result came from Jane doing something that Jane normally does.  His mad dash across the tarmac was symbolic of his realization that his ways were what was standing between him and Lisbon. So for the first time in a long time, Jane did something extreme that was driven by honesty and sincerity, by his acknowledgment of his own truth.

Nerwen_Aldarion: Nope. Jane has buried people alive, faked deaths, robbed a casino and faked a melt down to get himself fired...he is a man that goes to extremes. What was more interesting about this is that this action wasn't something he'd "planned" or anything that was a trick or a con, rather desperation and love fueled his motions here which is why it was so much more poignant.

It also meant so much more to Lisbon that way, where his elaborate con job to get her to stay failed, him finally ripping open his heart to let her see the honesty and love she'd been searching for worked. It makes sense to me, lies come easier to Jane than truth, thankfully he saw that it wouldn't be tricks that would get him his girl.

SteeleSimz: Personally I didn't think it was out of character. Jane has done tons of crazy things in the past and when presented with a final chance he took it. I can see why some fans believed it was out of character. I know a lot of them would have wanted him not to move on from his wife but this is TV and a lot of times in shows you want the happy ending. Would this happen in real life? Who knows.

Christine: The honesty was what was out of character. Jane finally realized he was in love and he was desperate to tell that to Lisbon. Love and desperation can drive anyone to do things that are a little out of character.

Was there anything that disappointed you about the season finale?

Robin: I can't say that there is, really. I loved every second of it, and thought the understated ending was absolutely perfect.

Nerwen_Aldarion: Gosh, that it wasn't two hours? That it had to end? That is about it.

SteeleSimz: I don't think anything disappointed me about the finale. I was looking forward to this episode so much more after we got the renewal news and even if we hadn't I would have been happy with the episode. It opened doors for future episode while closing other doors. I think Bruno and company did the best they could with what they knew might or might not happen. They tried to please fans in the end which is nice. Yes, not all fans are happy but a lot are with how this all played out.

Christine: I would have liked more kissing at the end and maybe a little more conversation once they were being honest about their feelings. Other than that, it was all good.

What was your favorite scene?

Robin: Everything that happened between Patrick jumping the fence to being hauled off the plane. There was SO MUCH in that scene. There's the stuff I mentioned earlier. I loved that he kept running even after twisting his ankle, stumbling yet continuing through pain just as he was about to do with his emotions. I loved that he immediately realized that telling her he loved her and his honesty was worth it despite how terrifying it was.

I loved that he simply confessed his feelings without asking her to stay, showing that he finally understood how to respect her wishes. Listen, not many shows can take a cliché and pack it so densely with subtle but real character work. Also, Simon Baker - my goodness - he owned the hell out of that scene.

Nerwen_Aldarion:  From the airport to the end. So much raw emotion as Jane chased her then declared his love. I adored it so much, especially how he was all "That feels good to say" in some ways I think he has never been more honest with Lisbon then he has with anyone, even his wife. Before then his life had consisted of elaborate schemes and being the "smartest man in the room."

But here no amount of charm, wit or cheating would get him what he truly needed. He finally grew up and admitted that he has feelings and that all of his talents have failed him here because they weren't what she needed, she needed his honesty and love. Of course I adored the final kiss, he just looked so...blissful once he saw her, at ease because he realized that he'd been rewarded for his actions.

This was the first pure thing we'd ever seen him do on the show for the past 6 years and it was wonderful to watch as Jane FINALLY started to heal from his wounds. It's amazing to see the man who hid in a room with blood on the walls in the pilot become the man who is willing to let himself open up in front of an entire plane of people and move past his insecurities and problems to be with the woman he loved.

SteeleSimz:  I just don't have one favorite scene. I would Jane confess on the plane, it brought tears to my eyes as he admits his love for Lisbon and even though she tells him it is too late he understands but he had to let her know. Then there is the scene is the TSA interrogation room, Lisbon showing up and asking him if he meant it. Then him joking a little before saying he meant every word followed by the kiss was just perfect. Also I personally liked Lisbon throwing water in his face.

Christine: Wow! So hard to choose.  I was originally going to say the fight though the door because of the raw emotion but I think I have to go with the final scene.  I love the slow realization that dawns over Jane as it sinks in that she came back. That she's here and she loves him and this is really happening. It was sweet and wonderfully joyful.  Now I just can't wait for season 7!

It was Patrick Jane and Teresa Lisbon's first case as an official couple on The Mentalist Season 7 Episode 1, but they decided to keep their private life private and not share their new romance with their colleagues just yet.

When an undercover FBI agent is murdered outside of a bowling alley, the team has to figure out both his murder and the case he was trying to solve, i.e. the sale of stolen military weapons to local drug dealers.

With Agent Kim Fischer officially transferred to another city in order to help her ailing mother, a new agent arrived. Agent Michelle Vega, a rookie straight from her training in Quantico joined the team and Jane was quick to figure out she had a military background.

Even though Agent Abbot wasn't suppose to know about Jane and Lisbon's personal relationship, he gave Jane the heads up that Marcus Pike was in the building. Pike had awkward meetings with both Lisbon and Jane and even asked Jane what he planned to offer Lisbon now that she'd turned down his marriage proposal.

When Teresa asked Jane about he and Pike's conversation, Jane told her everything and the two decided that they'd be able to figure out their own relationship together.

The Mentalist Round Table: Give Me Some Sugar, Baby

Patrick Jane is back for his final season and best of all, he and Teresa Lisbon are an official couple in The Mentalist Season 7 Episode 1.

Below, TV Fanatics Robin Harry and Christine Orlando are joined by The Mentalist fans Kate and @Nerwen_Aldarion from Twitter to debate Lisbon's decision to keep the relationship quiet, FBI Agent Michelle Vega joining the team and whether Marcus Pike was out of line when he spoke to Jane...

The Mentalist Round Table

Lisbon wants to hide her relationship with Jane from their colleagues. Do you agree?

Robin: I agree with her. The whole Pike thing went sour and everyone knew about it, and now she's dating another colleague who has a penchant for drawing attention to himself. So I don't blame her for wanting to keep her relationship with Jane on the down-low for now.

Kate:  Lisbon and Pike were pretty public in their relationship. Immediately resurfacing with Jane could be lead to all kinds of eyebrow raising and embarrassment for Lisbon. She'd rather avoid that for now. I understand her reluctance to share. Though their idea of how to keep things on the down low needs work.

@Nerwen_Aldarion: I see why she wants the relationship to be private, it does seem unseemly and no one likes to be the center of gossip. But she also needs to know that no matter what, being Jane's girlfriend will bring gossip.

Christine: I completely understood why she wanted to keep things quiet for a while but I also felt for Jane. There was a look on his face that made me hurt for him just a little bit when she said that.

What do you think of the new member of the team, Agent Michelle Vega?

Robin: I like her. She seems eager and bright, and she's already getting along with Jane so that's always a good sign. Excellent replacement for Fischer (who, by the way, I don't miss).

Kate:  I did like her. Michelle Vega seems well drawn and Josie Loren makes her likeable. As a rookie, I think she will be better accepted than poor Kim who was a pointless, second tier Lisbon for many fans.

@Nerwen_Aldarion:  I like her but not enough to judge.

Christine:  A "second tier Lisbon" definitely describes Fischer and as much as I liked the actress, I'm glad she's moved on. I think Agent Vega as a rookie fits in and brings something different to the team which will be fun. Her few interactions with Jane have already been entertaining.

Whose reaction do you most want to see when the news about Lisbon and Jane's relationship comes out?

Robin:  I would say Cho, but he doesn't react much to anything and it would probably be a letdown. So I'm gonna go with Wiley.

Kate:  Well, Abbott has known all along, Cho has been a bit of a dolt about it, no one else at the FBI has much invested in it, so I would say Jane. I want to see his sweet, affirming, happy reaction. And Lisbon. Hers too.

@Nerwen_Aldarion:  Wiley's! I'm hoping he catches them in a compromising position.

Christine:  Cho was so clueless last season that I really want to see his reaction, even if it is a standard, understated Cho one. I didn't expect that smile when Jane hugged him at the start of this episode so you never know what might happen.

Pike basically asked Jane what his intentions were with Lisbon? Did he have the right to ask and what did you think of Jane's answer?

Robin: Pike was out of line, and he was also misguided. Lisbon clearly values something else above "plans" or else she would have picked Pike and all he had to offer. Lisbon doesn't want or need to be provided for, and Pike still hasn't realized that. Jane's answer was spot on; he's treating them as equals in deciding where the relationship goes and what they want from it.

Kate:  Pike asking was fine. It would have been odd had he not. He almost married the woman, still cares about her presumably and was actually admirably restrained and understanding in the moment. Jane's answer was refreshing. It was respectful, honest and raw, a big step forward.

@Nerwen_Aldarion:  I think Pike wanted to present his package but I think Jane's answer was okay. Pike did so much so fast it was overwhelming but Jane and Lisbon were only tougher two weeks, it's a little early to be planning a white picket fence.

Christine: Pike was a little out of line but it's understandable. He's ego has got to be bruised. That was the shortest engagement in history. But I loved Jane's answer and that he was honest with Lisbon. He didn't hide anything from her and admitted he doesn't have a plan, other than they'll figure it out together. That sounds perfect to me.

What was your favorite scene from the episode?

Robin: I'm torn. I really want to pick the scene where Jane sticks up for Lisbon at the bowling alley. However, there's something about the line, "Hey, Cho, gimme some sugar baby!" and Cho's hint of a smile at Jane's hug at the crime scene that will be forever immortalized in my brain.

Kate:  Cliché, but my favourite scene was the first one at Lisbon's house, including Jane soaking in the sun on arrival. It was a small domestic moment with so much in it. I loved that their discussion was direct, mature and not gushy; it felt real. They are feeling their way but they are happy. I want them to be happy. Honorable mention: the Pike/Jane scene.

@Nerwen_Aldarion:  The final scene, I loved how Lisbon basically told Jane all she needs is him and I really love that he was so honest with her and wasn't hiding his flaws.

Christine:  There were so many! I'm about to break my own rule about only picking one.  It was everything from Jane meeting her in the morning to his happiness at the crime scene that spilled over into a hug with Cho. Then Jane sticking up for Lisbon at the bowling alley and even better, the way he was completely honest with Lisbon about what Pike had said. No more lying. That bodes well for their future.

The Mentalist Season 7 Episode 2 Review: The Greybar Hotel

A well conceived plan went horribly wrong on The Mentalist Season 7 Episode 2 leaving Patrick Jane scrambling to catch up.

When Marie Flanagan wouldn't flip on her boyfriend Cole Foster, the FBI went for Plan B and sent Teresa Lisbon to jail to be Marie's cell mate. It was a good plan with lots of fun moments along the way.

I loved how Jane was giving Lisbon advice about how much to lie and to wear her flip flops in the shower. When he helped put the cuffs on her I was half expecting a kinky comment, instead he went for pseudo-sweet when he told her, "I'll wait for you."

I can only imagine how difficult the waiting must have been for Jane. At least Lisbon had to keep focused on the task at hand. All Jane could do was worry about her and try to hunt down that warehouse.

I thought it was funny how Abbott asked Jane to point out the warehouse after he'd narrowed it down to a four mile radius. I couldn't tell if he was being sarcastic or if he was asking because he knows better than to underestimate Patrick Jane.

Jane and Lisbon's phone conversation incorporated good advice to get Marie to open up wrapped around the couple sharing insights into their own journey of doing the same, as Jane told Lisbon in this The Mentalist quote

Jane: You want to know how I got her to lower her guard?
Lisbon: How?
Jane: I lowered my own.

When Jane later suggested the jail break, I thought it sounded like a highly entertaining idea…I also wondered how it would go horribly wrong.

You'd think the FBI could have put a tracker on Lisbon since they knew when the jailbreak would take place but maybe they thought it was too risky. If Cole found a tracker on her later, it was a sure death sentence. Of course, if they'd been tracking her, at least they would have been right there to stop it.

No one knew Cole was such a loose cannon that he'd kill a gas station attendant in cold blood. Lisbon looked shell-shocked. There was nothing she could have done but having a murder committed right in front of her had to be overwhelming.

Jane looked absolutely terrified when he ran into that gas station convenience store. All he knew was someone had been shot. He obviously didn't know who.

That Vega wanted to stick to strict protocol was to be expected. She's a rookie and she's not sure what to make of Jane.  But Jane's worked with Lisbon for years and he knows she'd never make a silly mistake like stepping in blood at a crime scene.

When they held that gun to Teresa's head, I think I felt more for Patrick than I did for her. I completely understood why he walked into the middle of that scene unarmed and with no foreseeable backup. I don't think he could survive losing another women he loves. He'd rather die with her than get left behind.

I couldn't believe Jane was able to restrain himself to the point of not hugging Lisbon when they were saved. Talk about self control!

Other points worth mentioning:

  • Wiley was a hoot as he worried about Taco the cat. Do you think Big Vel, the horse thief is real?
  • Vega feeling comfortable with Cho makes total sense given her no nonsense style and military background.
  • Drinking from Jane's tea cup! Shouldn't alarms have gone off? He really needs the blue one back.

In the end, I had one disappointment. I desperately wanted to see the reunion scene between Patrick and Teresa when they got home at the end of the day, even if it was just for a moment. But other than that, I have no complaints. It was a fun hour with enough twists and turns to keep me on the edge of my seat and leave me wanting more.

The Mentalist Round Table: Behind Bars

Teresa Lisbon ended up behind bars on The Mentalist Season 7 Episode 2 - but her cellmate turned out to be crazier than anyone expected.

Beow, TV Fanatics Robin Harry and Christine Orlando are joined by The Mentalist fans Sabrina and Entwife Incognito to debate if Lisbon is worried, Vega's take on Jane and what was missing from "The Greybar Hotel."

The Mentalist Round Table

Do you think Teresa still worries that Jane will leave or was that just for Marie's sake?

Robin: What was it Patrick told her - to be convincing in a lie, it has to be mostly truth, right? I think she does worry about Jane's commitment and temperament, but she was secure enough to take the leap with him, so she'll be okay.

Sabrina:  Honestly, yes I think she's a little bit worried. Their relationship has just begun and though she knows his feelings for her (and so do we), she might not completely trust him. After all, he ran away for 2 years. Also, I would say that in any relationship, there's always this fear the other one might leave, so it'd be a normal reaction.

Entwife Incognito:  Lisbon seemed to be telling the truth about all her other points, so yes, I think she still worries. At this point, I think we are seeing some of Lisbon’s own trust/abandonment/commitment issues, from her childhood traumas, come to the fore, more than Jane’s behavior at the moment. But his past behavior triggered them big time, too.

Christine:  Jane has disappeared on her in the past so I think it's normal that she'd have that fear of him doing it again lingering in the back of her mind. I definitely think that was part of the truth she wrapped into the lie for Marie.

How do you think Agent Vega views Patrick Jane?

Robin: I don't think she understands why Jane commands so much respect, dogged loyalty (and in Wiley's case, a little fear) from the rest of the group. He's an untrained civilian, but he seems to be calling the shots. That doesn't make any sense to her.

Sabrina:  I have no idea. At first, she was a bit impressed but she got more confident in that episode. I have my own theory that she may think he's a bit...unstable, unreliable because of the way he acted at the gas station and therefore, she clearly asked to work more with Cho, who "makes sense to her" unlike Jane. But again, it's a theory...

Entwife Incognito: At this point, I think she thinks he’s a pretty crazy and that he shouldn’t be a part of the agency or a team. I had to laugh when she expected him to listen to her and follow protocol when Lisbon’s life was at stake. And her, a rookie, daring to tell Jane, who’s had a decade of experience.

Christine:  Being ex-military and raised by a father in the military,  rules and protocols are practically imbedded in Vega's DNA. They make her comfortable. Jane follows none of the rules yet somehow still commands the utmost respect from the team. I'm sure it makes absolutely no sense to Vega but I'm willing to give her time. She's smart. Eventually she'll see the light.

Jane tried to save Lisbon unarmed and with no backup. What was he thinking?

Robin: I don't think it was so much a romantic self-sacrificial gesture as much I think he was desperately trying to stall for time as the cavalry followed his Gatorade breadcrumbs. His phone had no signal so he couldn't call anyone, so he did the next best thing to delay Lisbon getting shot.

Sabrina:  He wasn't thinking, he was just scared for her, and maybe he was willing to die rather than losing her. Also, he tried to save some time. But I was a bit surprised to see Jane this way, as usually he has a plan, it really shows how scared he was for Lisbon. He couldn't even act confident in front of the bad guys.

Entwife Incognito:  Only that he had to get to her and save her any way he could and as fast as he could get there. It was Jane, after all, who offered Lisbon up for the breakout scheme, leaving her alone and without backup in a situation that went terribly wrong. They were a second from execution.

Christine:  I really felt for Jane. It was his plan that went wrong and he almost had to watch Lisbon get executed in front of him. I don't think Patrick can survive losing her so he pulled together a very hasty plan to buy time and try and save her. I think he would have rather taken a bullet himself than have to watch her die.

He'd Kill For Her
In The Mentalist Season 1 Episode 23, "Red John's Footsteps" after declaring that he'd willingly die if it meant capturing Red John, Jane ends up shooting and killing the one man he knows could lead him to the serial killer in order to save Lisbon's life. Even Jane looks completely shocked by his actions.

Was there anything in the episode that disappointed you?

Robin: I would have liked to see Jane and Lisbon react after that ordeal.  While they've been in tons of scrapes like this together, I think I would have liked to see them handle it as a couple, if only for a few seconds with a hug or something.

Sabrina:  The final scene : Erica. Too soon to see her... No, seriously, I don't see anything that disappointed me in the episode. It was great. But I admit that I don't understand why, unlike in the promo pic we saw, Jane didn't touch Lisbon's chin in the car while cuffing her. It could have been a very sweet moment.

Entwife Incognito: Definitely, no hug at the end. I’ve given up on a kiss. In fact, it looked to me that Jane was coming close for a hug and Lisbon stepped back from him! The only thing she left him was to offer a sports drink. Jane looked a little hurt to me, and who wouldn’t be? It just seems weird to me. Any pair of human beings would have hugged at that point.

Christine:  I was hoping for at least a small moment of them meeting up at home when it was all over. Just a moment for a hug after all of that trauma would have made the episode perfect for me. I was disappointed we didn't get it.

What was your favorite scene from "The Greybar Hotel"

Robin: By a mile, it was Abbott's utter badassery at the jail while talking to Marie. He's usually quietly intimidating, but he was just downright scary and awesome when he yelled at her. Even I jumped!  I want - no, I need - to see more of that side of Abbott.

Sabrina: Ah, tough question. I hesitate between Jane/Lisbon's cute conversation in the car, especially the line "I'll wait for you" and Wylie warning Vega about Jane's teacup. Poor guy was acting like the teacup was cursed and it was funny.

Entwife Incognito:  The scene in the back seat, bantering as they prepared Lisbon to go into the prison. Jane’s bravado and joking when he was dead worried. The expressions on Lisbon’s face as she listened to his instructions. The way he caressed and held her wrist just briefly when he set the cuffs, and her sleepy blink at that moment as she enjoyed the touch. Sigh

Christine:  Jane running into that gas station convenience store. He was absolutely terrified and I loved how he handled Vega. Being a rookie agent she was going to stick to protocol. He knew better than to argue with her and had no doubt that Lisbon didn't just slip in the blood. They'd worked far too many crimes scenes together for him to think that. Jane read the scene, dismissed Vega when he realized she'd be no help and took off to save Lisbon.

It's hard not to like Erika Flynn (played by one of my favorite guess stars, Morena Baccarrin).

When it comes to reading people and pulling off a con, she is as close to equal to Patrick Jane as anyone we've every seen. For that reason alone it was wonderful to have her back for The Mentalist Season 7 Episode 3

But poor Jane. The look on his face when he realized that he and Lisbon were about to work with Erika once again was that of a lamb being led to slaughter. No good would come of this and he knew it.

Erika Flynn Returns - The Mentalist
Jane and Lisbon must work the Erika Flynn (Morena Baccarin) on The Mentalist. "Orange Blossom Ice Cream" is the third episode of the show's seventh season.

I was relieved when he chose not to lie to Erika when she called him out on his romantic relationship with Lisbon. This open and honest version of Patrick Jane is definitely something I could get used to.

Jane wasn't kidding when he said his memory trick wasn't an easy one to master. How many people could think of anything else while being drowned in a tub of water, never mind remember a specific string of random words?  I doubt I could recall more than three of the words he was told and all I had to do was watch.

As usual, Erika was all about Erika and she was willing to use anyone she needed to in order to gain her freedom. When she accidentally let it slip about her past with Jane, I was thrilled that Lisbon understood that she was being played. Erika Flynn doesn't say anything by chance.

Back in the states, Cho took the information about the man Jane was suppose to contact and set up a sting. Shouldn't they have at least waited for Jane and Lisbon to board the plane out of Beirut? The possibility of it all going wrong and then having Patrick and Teresa stuck in Beirut when it hit the fan seemed risky to me.

Agent Vega took a huge step backwards when she lied to Cho. First, it was wrong to lie. Second, it was such a stupid lie. Why not just go ask Abbott if she could go along on Cho's operation because Wiley said he didn't need her. Vega obviously wants to play with the big boys but she needs to stop acting like a child if she wants to get there.

Cho was absolutely right when he told her that he can't work with someone that he can't trust. Something tells me that it's going to be a long road to regain Cho's trust, if she ever can.

Back to Beirut, the sequence where Jane searched the office for the book was well done. The swinging chain on that lamp was a nice touch and added to the suspense.

Jane and Lisbon's fight was so fake I was surprised Erika didn't pick up on it, but I suppose she thought she'd laid the ground work for such a fight to occur, so for her it made sense. When she told Jane he and Lisbon had no future as a couple, I half wondered if she believed it until she shrugged and said she had to try. But it appears that Patrick Jane is done lying and is willing to tell anyone who will listen how he feels about Teresa Lisbon as he told Erika in this The Mentalist quote

I love Lisbon and I'm taking you to the real police and they're going to lock you up for the rest of your life.

Jane

So much for the allure of Erika Flynn.

My favorite scene was the wonderfully awkward conversation Patrick and Teresa had about his personal relationship with Erika. I was proud of him for telling her that they'd kissed. Erika had made it sound like so much more. As for Loralei…well that was well played. He'd spill everything about Loralei if Teresa did the same about Walter Mashburn…and oh how I'd love to see him back again before the series ends!

The truth is the past is only as important as they make it and Jane and Lisbon were quick to see that, despite their curiosity, it's the present and the future that counts.

Jane's romantic rooftop gesture was really quite sweet, even if the orange blossom ice cream didn't live up to expectations. I only hope Lisbon decides they can start telling people at work sometime soon because I expect that will bring plenty of fun.

The situation becomes awkward when Jane and Lisbon head to Beirut where they must work with Erika who has made a deal to help capture who new boyfriend who works with terrorist in exchange for immunity. Erika's quick to call Jane out on his romantic relationship with Lisbon and he doesn't bother to deny it.

Later, Erika alludes to Lisbon that she and Jane shared a more intimate relationship in their past leading Lisbon to ask Jane about it. He admits that they kissed. Then Lisbon asks about Loralei and Patrick says he'll be happy to tell her everything if she'll answer a few questions for him about Walter Mashburn who happens to be Lisbon's ex-lover. Lisbon decides it's better to drop the entire subject.
