Lauren Stamile has booked another high-profile guest-starring gig.

The actress (Community, Grey's Anatomy, Burn Notice) will portray Madison Yardley on the September premiere of The Mentalist.

According to TV Line, this character is the wife of a murder victim whose corpse is found two years after he was reported missing. No word on exactly how Stamille's Yardley will be involved, but it's safe to say she becomes a suspect for Jane and company.

At this point, it may be television's best kept secret.

But it will be revealed before 2013 flips to 2014.

Indeed, at today's Television Critics Association press tour discussion, CBS addressed the homicidal elephant in The Mentalist's room and promised that the identity of Red John “will be revealed by the end of this calendar year.”

A Red John Lead

Look for the list to be narrowed by one on The Mentalist Season 6 premiere, which airs on September 29 and which will feature Lauren Stamille as a guest star.

She will appear as the wife of a murder victim whose body is found after two years after the man was reported missing.

The Red John mystery will be solved on The Mentalist Season 6.

Before the calendar year is up, no less.

So, what will this mean for the relationship between Jane and Lisbon?

Investigating an Heiress

Series creator Bruno Heller touched on that topic in a chat with TV Line, teasing the upcoming introduction of a new female cast member in early 2014.

"The chemistry has always been there bubbling up. But he now has other priorities and other agendas and other pressures,"Heller says of Jane and his feelings about Lisbon. “When you’re as good a detective as Jane is, it’s very hard to walk away even when you want to walk away... Some people wont let Jane walk away from what he’s so good at. And our new female lead has something to do with that.”

Interesting. Cryptic. Intriguing.

The Mentalist Season 6 kicks off on Sunday, September 29.

It looks like NCIS isn't the only CBS hit that will be losing a major player this fall.

CBS sources have confirmed to TV Line that Amanda Righetti and Owain Yeoman will be exiting The Mentalist toward the end of Season 6.

Will the departures of Van Pelt and Rigsby be connected to the reveal of Red John, which has been promised to take place before 2013 concludes?

Creator Bruno Heller simply says his drama is heading into “most dramatic and game changing season and anything can happen.”.

Mentalist Stars

In possibly related news, The Mentalist - which returns with new episodes on September 29 - will be introducing a new female series regular in 2014.

Rockmond Dunbar is adding another law enforcement gig to his resume.

The actor - who has portrayed the sheriff of Charming on Sons of Anarchy for the past two seasons - has been cast as Dennis Abbott on The Mentalist.

CBS sources describe the FBI agent to Deadline as possessing "a no-nonsense" attitude and as being unimpressed by Patrick Jane’s skills and/or charm.

Rockmond Dunbar as Eli Roosevelt

Dunbar will recur on Season 6 - on episodes 7, 8 an 9, to be exact - but has the potential to end up as one of two new series regulars on the CBS hit.

Much to the surprise/chagrin of fans, Amanda Righetti and Owain Yeoman are both exiting the drama and creator Bruno Heller has said replacement characters are on the way. At least one will be female.

The Mentalist returns with new episodes on Sunday, September 29.

The Mentalist Round Table: "Red Listed"

Patrick Jane's need for secrecy put seven innocent lives in jeopardy throughout "Red Listed."

Well, perhaps they weren't quite so innocent... but they weren't Red John.

Below, TV Fanatic Christine Orlando is joined by The Mentalist fans Feint, @SteeleSimz, and @Donnamour1969 as they debate Kirkland's place in the Red John legacy and the long awaited return of Madeleine Hightower.

-------------------------------------------

Did you think Bob Kirkland was Red John?

Feint: Yes, I thought and hoped Kirkland was Red John. Of course, it was obvious he would be just another person hunting for him but they made such a good case of him. After Partridge, he was my #1 suspect.

@SteeleSimz:  I never pegged Kirkland to be Red John even when he first appeared in season five. Yes, he did have that creepy vibe but I always figured he was on the same mission as Jane and for the same reason.

@Donnamour1969: No, I never thought Kirkland was Red John. Actually, a few of us on Twitter believed he was on his own personal vigilante mission since he killed Lennon.

Christine: This show always keeps me guessing. I thought he was a Red John minion at first but this season I'd begun to suspect he had his own agenda. Turns out that was the case, in a big way. At least Jane kept all his fingers.

Kirkland's Master Plan

Were you surprised that the FBI and Homeland Security have been investigating Jane for almost a decade?

Feint: No, I was not surprised as we already knew it. They are most likely also protecting Red John(willingly or not) by gathering the information on Jane.

@SteeleSimz: Part of me was shocked first that they were but after watching the episode and having time to think about it more I'm not surprised anymore. The FBI and Homeland would look at all connections to the Red John cases and Jane having been a victim would have made both groups follow him. I was more surprised that I never even thought that both groups would be keeping tabs on Jane after all these years.

@Donnamour1969: It wasn't a surprise at all since they showed us last year at the end of "Red Dawn".

Christine: Not surprised that they're keeping tabs on him but a bit surprised that it started 9 years ago and it involves both agency. But I guess it's a long game. They either think he could be Red John or that they'll lead them to him.

Should Jane have just given Kirkland the real list and let him hunt down Red John?

Feint: No. Red John belongs to Jane. Plus, Kirkland would've killed him either way.

@SteeleSimz: Good question. We all know Jane is secretive in his hunt for Red John, he didn't even want to tell  Lisbon that he had the list so giving it up easily to Kirkland would have been out of character for Jane. Despite both of them wanting the same thing I think Kirkland said it best when he said he was "willing to kill" anyone on the list in order to get him. Jane once upon a time might have wanted to do the same thing but not anymore, he only wants the one person that killed his family.

@Donnamour1969: He should have if it came down to his life, but Jane knew it was just as important for Kirkland to find out the real list, so he wouldn't let himself kill Jane. That's why Jane taunted him a bit. I think he stalled as long as he could, hoping he would talk him down perhaps, or make a deal.

Christine: No, because several innocent people would end up dead if he had but I'll admit that as soon as I saw the blowtorch, I would have caved and given him anything he wanted.

Were you happy to see Madeleine Hightower return?

Feint: I was happy to see her return but it was quite late, really. It took this long for us to find out what happened to her after the season 3 finale.

@SteeleSimz: I LOVED that Hightower was back, I just wished she had more screen time. When her character first appeared I wasn't a fan but over the course of the season I came to like her character and missed having her around. She did have some great lines, especially when she told Jane that he was a "pain in the ass." I always thought that she came to care about the team and always looked out for them even on the run. She wants Jane to kill Red John not only for himself but for herself also and the rest of the team.

@Donnamour1969: I always loved Hightower - she's one tough broad. It was great seeing her back, and Jane sure played on the little crush I think she had on Jane.

Christine: Hightower has always been a favorite of mine so I was really disappointed when she completely dropped off the grid. I was very happy to see her back and helping Patrick despite the danger to herself and her family. I love her interactions with Jane. Completely no-nonsense yet there's respect and a hit of attraction there. It's a lot of fun to watch.

With Bob Kirkland out of the mix, who do you think is Red John?

Feint: It has to be Bret Stiles. Boring and obvious but makes sense. Bertram, Smith and McAllister are all "Tyger, tyger" and Haffner is not high enough in the church to be anyone important.

@SteeleSimz: From the moment the list was released I went with Haffiner. After four episode I am even more certain that he is the man that killed Jane's family.

@Donnamour1969: I still think it's Ray Haffner, but this secret organization sure throws a huge wrench in things. Brings new light to the possibility of "he is many." Red John, Todd Johnson, Brett Partridge, now Reed Smith--all are somehow in the "Tyger Tyger" club. Visualize
may be in there somewhere too. I can't wait to find out how this all fits together.

Christine: I want to say Haffner but really, it could be any of them. The show has done a wonderful job of building this mystery to great heights. I only hope the conclusion doesn't disappoint after such a dizzying ride.

What was your favorite scene?

Feint: I liked all scenes with Kirkland but the ones with him and Smith were the best ones. A little disappointed about "Tyger, tyger" though and I can't quite understand how Todd Johnson was part of it. The last scene was amazing.

@SteeleSimz: Favorite scene? You want me to choose one scene out of the entire episode? Okay well that would have to the be the entire scene with Kirkland and Jane as he tries to get information out of Jane. Even though the scene is tense and you know that it is supposed to be serious Jane acts like his typical self and makes a smart ass remark to lighten the mood a little.

@Donnamour1969: So many! This was my favorite episode so far this season. If I had to pick one scene, it would be when Jane and Kirkland spoke at Homeland Security. The look on Kirkland's face when he found out he had the wrong list was priceless. I laughed out loud. I also loved the opening scene with Smith accusing Jane of murder. It's seldom that you see Jane so irked, and it was great how Smith manipulated that anger a bit. And of course, Cho's teasing Rigsby about married sexuality. Great stuff.

Christine: There were so many great scenes. I'm going to go with Jane and Hightower meeting at the Heavenly Gardens Chinese restaurant. Madeleine was tough but there was still that hint of something more between her and Jane…and I loved Jane's look when she said she had the gun pointed at something important under the table.

The Mentalist Review: The Hard Touch

$

There have been so many twists and turn on the road to find Red John that I find I'm second guessing myself every week. The Mentalist Season 6 Episode 5 was no exception.

This installment focused on Ray Haffner as he took on the role of "victim's advocate" when a Visualize member was murdered. In order in insinuate himself into the CBI team he even procured a letter from the Lt. Governor of California…which made me wonder if Tiger went as far as the governor's office.

The Visualize Connection

Haffner certainly did his best to get under everyone's skin. From insulting the entire team on their investigation to telling Jane in this The Mentalist quote

You're so much smarter than everyone else but it isn't helping you catch Red John is it?

Haffner

Haffner's arrogance was on full display, which only made me think that he's NOT Red John. Suddenly Ray Haffner seemed too obvious a suspect but the way he eyes Teresa every time he sees her always makes my skin crawl. That could just make him a creep, not a diabolical serial killer.

And the way he warned Teresa and Grace to get clear of Jane made him appear more of a lackey, not the man in charge.

However I did love it when Haffner tried to spin his story which he kept from the team until the truth caught up with him…

Haffner: I was hired by Visualize to protect Parkman from Frost.
Grace: Bang up job.

I can't get enough of snarky Grace. I hope we see more of that in the near future.

I was glad that Teresa put Jane in charge of figuring out how Parkman was killed in a seemingly empty hotel room. If anyone could figure out what the "trick" was, it's Patrick Jane.

The oddity in the episode was that Bret Stiles was missing. You'd expect him to be front and center during a Visualize case but he was no where to be found…by anyone. Even his own people. No one's seen him since Red John sent Jane the list. Hmm…

My one complaint was with Kira Tinsley and Cho. Can't the latter catch a break when  it comes to romance? On The Mentalist Season 5, his love interest was a hooker/ junkie who got pregnant and ended up with someone else. Now the woman with eyes for him was actually a private investigator who was paid to get close to Cho and ended up being murdered by Red John.

Enough already! If Wayne and Grace get to be so ridiculously happy then Cho deserves a girlfriend too.

My other issue was with the investigation into Kirkland's death. I didn't trust Detective Cordera for a minute. Maybe I was reading him wrong and he was just eager to close the case, but it felt like something was off. Like perhaps he's part of Tiger, Tiger. And why wasn't anyone asking how Kirkland got out of the transport van in the first place?

So Jane's got a new clue…at the expense of Kira's life. But how will he get his Red John suspects to disrobe for him. Offer them a beach vacation? Invite them all to a group sauna? How will Patrick Jane get the men on his list to remove their shirts?

I have absolutely no idea, but I can't wait until next week to find out.

The Mentalist presented Patrick Jane with his latest clue to Red John's identity this Sunday. It was "The Red Tattoo."

Below, TV Fanatic Christine Orlando is joined by The Mentalist fans Kate and Katie as they decide if Ray Haffner has serial killer potential and why Cho is so unlucky in love.

Join in the debate and discussion now...

----------------------------------

----------------------------------

----------------------------------
Ray Haffner. Creepy jerk or Red John? And who is your top suspect now?

Kate: Honestly, I have no idea who Red John is at this point and give huge kudos to Bruno Heller and the writers for this. For me it is fruitless to guess as they could make any one of them Red John. I would really rather have an aha moment at the Big Reveal. Having said that, Haffner remains a credible Red John and is in my top 3 with Bertram and Stiles. He is certainly confident and menacing enough. And Reed Diamond? Fantastic in this episode.

Katie: Ray Haffner is definitely a creepy jerk, but I'm not sure he has what it takes to lead the people. I have a strong feeling that he is working for Red John, but I don't think he is Red John. My new suspect is Bret Stiles, just because he has a cult and has what it takes to get people to believe and follow insane things.

Christine: I love the actor, Reed Diamond and Haffner's been at the top of my list for a while, but after this episode he just felt like a creepy jerk.  Suddenly I'm liking Reede Smith as Red John. Something about the way he sneered at Kirkland and told him that Tiger, Tiger even let a low level guy like him in made him sound like a plausible suspect to me.

The Mentalist Round Table

Would you like to see Cho have a real love interest?

Kate: Our man Cho has been unlucky in love so I would not deny him finding someone. However, my interest in characters' love lives lies elsewhere. You know who I am talking about Bruno & Co. As an aside, I thought Cho was remarkably unfazed by the revelation that Kira was playing him. What a guy.

Katie: Of course! I was really bummed that the girl had come just to plant a bug. Cho needs a lady in his life! I think he is secretly jealous of the happiness Rigsby has with Van Pelt, because he wants to feel that happiness too!

Christine: The guy just can't catch a break when it comes to romance. I hated that Kira was just using him to get information yet I was still hoping she could be a real love interest at some point. Cho really could use a personal life and although I don't want it to take over the show I'd love to see a little time devoted to it.

How should Jane get the men on the list to remove their shirts?

Kate: Well, we've all seen the preview for next week so it looks like that cat is out of the proverbial bag and Jane is willing to go to extremes to get the suspects to bare arms. It would be less sensational, but I wonder why he wouldn't simply bring all suspects in to the CBI and ask them to roll up their sleeves. Anyone who refuses would likely be the guy. Don't know the civil liberties/reasonable and probable grounds rules around that.

Katie: He should get them to take off their shirts in some sort of trick. I mean if he outright asked them to take them off, Red John would suspect something. It ought to be interesting to see how he does it.

Christine: Group sauna? Beach vacation? Free massages?  So many ways to go, most very funny. In reality I can't even imagine how this will all play out.

Visualize has played such a pivotal role in the Red John story. Do you think the CBI should send someone in undercover and if so who?

Kate:
I really don't have a sense where Visualize fits into the larger story and I don't know what CBI would hope to accomplish by sending someone in undercover now. Events are moving too quickly, they have bigger (Red John) fish to fry and putting someone on the inside at Visualize at this point would not pay off for a long time, so I would say no. (Maybe someone is there already ... ).

Katie: Visualize is creepy. They've been around for so long, I think that it makes sense that Red John will come from Visualize. It may be bad though, to send someone in. I feel like every time the team tries to one up Red John, it comes back and bites them in the butt.

Christine: I was really hoping they'd send Grace in on an undercover mission to infiltrate the cult. It could make quite a compelling story?

What was your favorite scene from this episode of The Mentalist Season 6?

Kate:
There were so many great scenes: Jane and Cho ("the plot thickens”), the Lisbon-Van Pelt-Haffner exchange at the hotel, Cho (priceless) and Rigsby in the park, the dash to Kira Tinsley's house (inTENSE, but I have to go with Jane and Haffner verbally sparring as they left the crime scene. Haffner's comeuppance line followed by “you're a worse psychic than you were a cop" did it for me. But, hey, what was that hand on Jane's shoulder action by Haffner? Creepy.

Katie: My favorite scenes were the creepy encounters Lisbon kept having with Haffner. I really felt like they allowed us a better look into Haffner's character.

Christine: I loved Jane and Haffner's verbal sparring. It's like Haffner just kept looking for a way to rattle Jane but he never let it happen. I do look forward to seeing more of these two together in the future.

The Mentalist Preview: Is Jane Finally Catching Red John?

On The Mentalist Season 6 Episode 5, we saw Patrick Jane get closer than ever to the identity of Red John.

As Kira Tinsley lay dying after being attacked by the elusive serial killer, she managed to tell Jane one vital piece of information: Red John has a three-dotted tattoo on his left shoulder.

So, as the preview for The Mentalist Season 6 Episode 6 tease, Jane gathers the five remaining Red John suspects to finally find out the killer's identity.

Jane & Bret Stiles

I had an early peek at tonight's installment, written by Ken Woodruff and directed by John Showalter, and here's a sneak peek at what you'll see in tonight's thrilling episode.

  • We begin with Jane setting the stage for confronting his suspects, then go back 2 days.
  • We see Stiles and his disciples during a ritual that tells us more about him and his power.
  • Jane gets help from Teresa regarding gathering the suspects together.
  • Jane realizes the suspects cannot know he knows about the tattoo.
  • There's a heartfelt moment between Jane and Teresa.
  • Jane also has his own quiet moment before commencing the evenings activities.
  • The list of five suspects is shortened after this episode.
  • As we saw in the preview, there is a big explosion but who is involved? Hmmmm...

Do you think Jane will finally get all his answers and the identity of Red John will finally come to him? Of the five suspects, who do you think is truly Red John?

The Mentalist airs Sundays at 10 p.m. on CBS following The Good Wife.

UPDATE: Due to NFL overrun, this episode of The Mentalist will now air next Sunday, November 10. Tonight will be a return.

The Mentalist Review: Not So Easy

$
0
0

We knew it couldn't be that easy. Three red dots. It was Jane's leverage. It was his map to finding Red John.

After watching The Mentalist Season 6 Episode 6, I'm still not certain if those dots sent Jane in circles or straight into the middle of yet another conspiracy.

Jane's Master Plan

First, Jane had to gather the five remaining suspects in one place…and what a place he chose. But we'll get back to that in a moment. Let's go over the suspects first:

The most wily was Bret Stiles. The cult leader is even squirrelier than I thought. That ascension ceremony was impressive, in a completely crazy sort of way.

The giant eye on the wall, the masses of followers in flowing robes. The naked women getting marked with blood. I expected them to start handing out the Kool-Aid at any moment.

Of course Stiles claims he's dying. Is it true or is he playing us once again?

I liked that Lisbon sent Grace in first. He's always had a weakness for her... or should I say he's always thought there was a weakness in her. He thought he could manipulate her. The Grace Van Pelt that arrived at the Ecuadorian Consulate wasn't that girl. She's a lot stronger than she used to be and therefore Stiles was quick to show her the door.

Reede Smith was easy enough for Jane to bait as was Sheriff McAllister.

Haffner was another matter. It took Lisbon to convince him to show up. He always seems like such an arrogant ass but he did appear to be sincerely shocked and affronted that Teresa thought he could be Red John. Of course, if he's not RJ, then finding out the girl he likes thinks he might be an evil serial killer must be a blow to his bloated ego.

Bertram was an easy catch. Too easy perhaps. He's always so eager when it comes to information about the Red John case. There was really no question that he'd show up.

With all his fish headed towards the same barrel, Jane and Lisbon made their way down to Malibu.

Speaking of Jane's former home, I hate it when he goes there. It's such a dark and painful place for him. I'm sure he and his wife and daughter had happy memories there but none of them are strong enough to banish that bloody red face on the wall. I sort of hope the entire place burns down when all of this is done. Maybe it will help him move on.

Surprisingly, Lisbon told Jane she wouldn't stand in his way when it came to Red John when she said in this The Mentalist quote...

Some men, men like Red John, they don't deserve a trial. They don't deserve a jury. They deserve what they have coming to them.

Lisbon

Like Patrick, I'm skeptical. I'm not sure she can just turn off the ethics that have guided her her entire career, even when it comes to Red John.

I also had to wonder what Jane's intentions were when he told her…

You're the most honest person I know. You would never lie, not about something like this.

Jane

Did he believe her? Was he manipulating her by trying to make her feel guilty? I'm really not certain what was going through his mind in that moment.

But when he pulled over to watch the sunset I knew exactly what he was up to, and the way he accomplished it broke my heart just a little. Because when he hugged Teresa and told her…

You have no idea what you've meant to me. What you mean to me.

Jane

I believe he meant it. And then he had to go and ruin the moment by swiping her phone and ditching her on the beach.

Damn him.

Like Lisbon, I was worried for Jane. He wasn't only going to uncover a diabolically clever serial killer, he was also cornering several other possibly dangerous men and he was doing it alone. There was no way to know who would be on Jane's side and who would gladly kill him where he stood.

When they all removed their shirt sleeves I wondered if more than one man would have those dots. So let's go over the final five…

  1. Bret Stiles - He's a crazy, a true believer and a whistler but he has no dots. Plus I wonder if he still possesses the physical strength to have beaten Kira to death.
  2. Sheriff McCallister - He's got the dots and he's smarter than he looks but my gut tells me it's not him.
  3. Ray Haffner - He's certainly arrogant enough and creepy, especially when it comes to women but somehow I see him more as a manipulative, bullying jerk than Red John.
  4. Director Bertram - He's got the dots, the position, and the power. His politician's smile is borderline sociopathic. Is that enough to make him Red John?
  5. Reede Smith - He's got the dots and there's still something that haunts me about the way he told Kirkland that they even let lower level guys like him in. Did he just mean Tiger, Tiger or was he laughing because he's the man at the top?

In the end, we have more questions than answers once again. The shot gun went off. The house blew up and we have no idea who was left inside.

All we were left with was Teresa's desperate, pleading voice begging Jane not to go through with his plan, alone.

Now it's anyone's guess what comes next ...

Patrick Jane thought it would be easy. He thought he could gather all the Red John suspects in one room, use three dots and - boom! - identity the serial killer.

But The Mentalist Season 6 Episode 6 may have thrown our hero into another conspiracy instead, leaving viewers with more questions than answers once again.

With the most pressing, of course, being: Who is Red John? Stiles, McCallister, Haffner, Bertram or Smith?

The Mentalist Round Table: "Fire and Brimstone"

The search for three little red dots ended in a huge explosion and left fans wondering who survived The Mentalist Season 6, Episode 6.

Below, our TV Fanatic Christine Orlando joins up with The Mentalist fans Entwife and Neha to decide why Jane left Lisbon on the beach and if a red tattoo will actually lead Jane to Red John.

----------------------------------

What's your favorite "Fire and Brimstone" scene?

Entwife:  Jane in Malibu overcoming his fear and anxiety, summoning the courage to follow through with his very dangerous plan.  He knows that he might not survive it. He knows it's complex. He nervously adjusts and re-adjusts both his pistol and his shotgun. He adjusts his breathing several times and relaxes his body language. He does not want to do this but he wills to do it.

Neha:  The beach scene at sunset is a no-brainer, but I also really enjoyed Jane's interaction with stiles at the consulate.

Christine: Jane telling Lisbon what he means to her on the beach. The look on her face broke my heart because I knew exactly what he was up to...but I still believe he meant what he said. Someday soon I hope we get a real hug where he doesn't have an ulterior motive behind it.

The Mentalist Round Table

Is Bret Stiles really dying?

Entwife:  Yes, I think he is. Jane believes he is, so I see no reason to doubt it.

Neha: I think he is going underground. I have a feeling he just wants to be a hidden partner at visualize. That creepy scene with the stage and women drenched in blood made me come up with that.

Christine: I'm really torn. I love the character so I hope he sticks around and with the FBI now after him it wouldn't surprise me if he faked his death and tried to leave the country. I'm sure he could run his crazy Visualize empire from anywhere.

Did Jane ditch Lisbon because he was trying to protect her or because he thought she'd stop him from killing Red John?

Entwife:  I think he was trying to protect her life, and her reputation from compromise. If anyone could have stopped him from following through on a kill, it would have been Lisbon. But also, he would not have wanted her to see him go that far, truly the worst of him.

Neha:  It's a combination of both I think. He has always kept her out of things when it came to red john, he is a control freak, is it really that surprising to her? Plus, everyone could tell she was lying in the attic when she said she would let him kill RJ.

Christine: All of the above. I think he wants to protect her from Red John. And as much as he doesn't want her to stop him from killing him, he also cares enough about her that he doesn't want her to compromise herself by letting him do it. That led him to a heartfelt confession and then ditching her on a beach at sunset thus ruining a wonderful shipper moment. Damn you Jane!

The shotgun blast? The explosion? Any theories on what happened in Malibu?

Entwife:  Totally at sea about the incidents at the end. There was also a shout of Stop! I couldn't tell whose voice it was. It did sound like a shotgun blast to me, but I'm no gun expert. The explosion, seemed like two bombs, not one, detonated separately at each side of the building. Totally confusing.

Neha:   I think it would be interesting to see who they kill, it's probably not going to be the 3 men with the tattoos, or maybe no one.  Stiles I feel is too important to the story.

Christine:  I really don't want any of them dead but I can't imagine they all walked out alive. It sounded like someone made a move on Jane for the gun and it went off. I have no idea what caused the explosion.  Could Red John have outmaneuvered Jane and set it all up ahead of time? I don't see how but he always seems to be two steps ahead so almost anything is possible.

Three of the final five suspects had the tattoo. Do you think one of them is Red John and if so, which one?

Entwife: I do think one of the three tattooed suspects is Red John. I think the marks are probably something to do with Tyger, Tyger. But I also don't believe Haffner or Stiles is Red John. So, for me, that means he's one of the three with tattoos.

Neha:   I have always loved the idea of Haffner being RJ. His creepy obsession with Lisbon and the fact that she gets murdered by him in her dream. I am sure RJ, whoever he is, has always had an eye on Lisbon.

Christine: The show has me going round in circles on this. Is Red John involved in Tyger, Tyger? Did Kira's death have anything to do with Red John or was it just members of Tyger, Tyger trying to cover their tracks which could make the red dots nothing but a red herring? I change my mind on Red John's identity almost daily. I think all five suspects are still completely in play.

Emily Swallow has been promoted before she even premieres.

With the actress set to debut on The Mentalist Season 6 on December 1, TV Line confirms that Swallow has already been upped to series regular status.

When news first broke of her casting, the former Monday Mornings star was only signed for three episodes.

Swallow will portray a character named Kim Fischer who has some kind of profound impact on Jane's life. Her first installment will also mark the show's first episode after the Red John case is finally solved.

Earlier this fall, Rockmond Dunbar was also promoted to series regular. He plays FBI Supervisory Agent Dennis Abbott and will debut on The Mentalist Season 6 Episode 7… airing this Sunday!

Has your heart recovered yet from event on The Mentalist Season 6 Episode 6?

First, the list of suspects who could be Red John was reduced from five to three, as Jane realized three of them - Bertram, Smith and McAllister - all have the same tattoo on their left shoulder.

And then, as we know, the house went BOOM!

The Great Red Dragon Scene

What will go down on The Mentalist Season 6 Episode 7 this Sunday? I've seen the episode and can offer up a few hints...

  • The explosion does cause some casualties and our Red John list is narrowed even more.
  • Despite being in an explosion and in the hospital, Jane's hair never looks less than amazing.
  • Someone utters the dialogue warning, "This is going to hurt."
  • We will learn more about this secret society that seems to be growing with the number of members.
  • Rigsby and Van Pelt get caught in some crossfire.
  • If you need a reminder where "Tyger, Tyger" comes from, you'll get one.
  • Rockmond Dunbar arrives as Dennis Abbott - and doesn't waste any time stirring things up.
  • Some key fixtures of the show do not survive the episode.
  • A big change happens in the final scene that will make things more difficult for our team moving forward.

Check back first thing Monday morning for my interview with episode writer Jordan Harper, who explains some of the big moments in the episode, and visit TV Fanatic the moment this installment ends for a full review.

The Mentalist Season 6 airs Sundays at 10/9c on CBS.

The Mentalist Review: Is He Red John?

Did Jane finally found the man who slaughtered his wife and daughter in The Mentalist Season 6 Episode 7?

Is it all just another ruse?

The Great Red Dragon Scene

As the house explodes, we know two things:

  1. Reede Smith and Gail Bertram are alive.
  2. But are the other three really dead?

Cho seemed convinced. There was enough DNA to positively identify Bret Stiles, Ray Haffner and Tom McAllister in the wreckage but their remains were so charred they couldn't be identified any other way.

I don't know about you but unless I see an actual dead body on my screen I'm not trusting anyone's lab results. That's what The Mentalist has done to me. It's made me completely paranoid.

I couldn't blame Lisbon for letting her guard down around Bertram. When she saw those three dots on Smith's shoulder she assumed he was Red John. She's lucky that assumption didn't get her killed. We know it almost meant the end for Patrick Jane.

I was shocked when Bertram took the scalpel to Jane's throat but what was his plan? He would have had Jane's blood all over him. Perhaps he was going to act as though he stopped the perpetrator. Either way, he never got the chance.

Van Pelt did a great job of tracking down the doctor from Reede's past and Rigsby covered his reaction well when Jane told him over the phone not to trust anyone in law enforcement.

I was surprised that Cordero had no problem trying to kill the CBI agents but perhaps I shouldn't have been. He might have expected Tyger, Tyger to cover have his back.

But really, can anyone expect that anymore? Since Cordero was sent to kill Reede, it appears that Tiger, Tiger is more than willing to kill off its own members to protect the group.

The interrogation of the Officer didn't reveal much that we didn't already know but watching Jane work as a human lie detector is always fun. I had to smile when the man looked at Jane and told him, "Get out of my head."

After a pow wow with Lisbon, Jane realized that when Partridge told Lisbon "Tyger, Tyger" as he lay dying he was actually hoping she was a member, He was asking for help. That led to Cho heading out to find the man's body.

Lisbon: I'll have Cho track down the body but Partridge could be buried by now.
Jane: Well, have Cho bring a shovel.

Jane was so close to finding his answers that nothing was going to stop him, certainly not a little dirt. Thankfully it didn't come to that and Cho was able to find his body with the skin ripped off the man's shoulder. Definitely Tyger, Tyger at work.

That Cho let Detective Cordero get away was a bit surprising but I suppose the goal was to get Reede Smith back safely.

Reede's interview was illuminating. Off course he wanted immunity but Patrick quickly explained why that wasn't going to happen in this The Mentalist quote

Get up off your ass and walk but hey, good luck getting out of the building before your friends catch up with you.

Jane

Reede Smith's story was innocuous enough. A back injury led to a pain medication addiction. But things spiraled out of control when it caused him to accidentally shoot and kill a 12-year-old girl. It should have meant the end of his career and prison time. Instead it led to The Blake Association. Tyger, Tyger burning bright. Someone must really like that poem.

There are certainly similarities to a tiger and Red John. They are both vicious in their kills yet stealthy enough that you probably won't see it coming until it's far too late.

The Blake Association could be 100s. It could be 1000s. We don't know for certain but we do know it includes Gail Bertram.

I was shocked that Jane told the media that Gail Bertram was Red John. Does he truly believe that he is or was it just a way to flush him out?

Bertram obviously has no qualms about getting blood on his hands and quite a lot of it considering what he did to that poor bartender.

The fake out at his aunt's house was kind of brilliant. There was so much chaos that he simply slipped out as another member of SWAT. I was half waiting for Jane to ask every one of them to remove their shirts on the spot.

And just as the CBI team was getting close, in strutted FBI Supervisory Agent Dennis Abbott from Austin, Texas. Unfortunately, I couldn't really blame the powers that be for sending him. The corruption within the CBI has made the organization completely untrustworthy.

But they took Jane's couch. They broke his favorite teacup! No good will come of this.

What does this mean for our CBI team? No one, including Lisbon believes that Jane's about to walk away.

Do you believe that Stiles, Haffner and McAllister are truly dead or could one of them still be pulling the strings? Is Gail Bertram actually Red John? I'd say he's got the arrogance and the capacity for horrific violence that could make it so. At this point nothing on The Mentalist would surprise me.

What about you?

The Mentalist Q&A: Is This The Final Red John Chapter?

Are Red John’s days of tormenting Patrick Jane truly coming to an end?

On one hand, it sure seems that way since last night - SPOILER ALERT - we finally found out the identity of Red John, even though he yet again managed to escape Jane’s grasp.

Or, speaking for the skeptics out there, are we just being led down a path that is going to have a twist to keep the storyline going longer than we could imagine or even want?

Who better to ask than the man who wrote The Mentalist Season 6 Episode 7, Co-Producer Jordan Harper?

Besides finding out just how final things are going to be in the coming episodes, I also made sure to inquire about how the now-disbanded CBI team will function, are we already seeing the seeds of why Rigsby and Van Pelt are departing and, because I had to ask, is Cho ever going to have a successful romance?!?

Jane in Hospital Bed

TV Fanatic: Approaching this season, knowing the writers were going to take these big steps forward with the story, did you approach it any differently or is it more like having fun finally getting to do a lot of this stuff that maybe you’ve been talking about doing for a while?

Jordan Harper:  The answer is both. First of all, I think when it comes to writing my own individual episode, I approached it very differently than a normal episode…it was a tremendous amount of fun to write and put together with the rest of the writing staff.  Obviously, these stories were put together with the help of the entire writing staff.

But I had a lot of fun getting to really dig into the mythology more than we did the drama. I'm a mythology nerd with the shows that I love. I hope we got to answer some big questions for the fans in this episode. I had a lot of fun coming up with the answers.

TVF: Now, I know you can't totally answer this, but are we seeing what we're moving toward as truly an end to the Red John story or is this just a new chapter? Is it truly going to wrap up?

JH: Sometimes when I read things on the Internet, it seems like a lot of the fans suspect that we're just lying our socks off to them every time we talk to you guys. No. This is Red John's final chapter.

TVF: We lost several characters in the explosion last week. How much talk did the writers have with that?

JH: When you sit down to plan out a final thing like that, there is a version where one-by-one, the suspects are eliminated and, over the course of six episodes, you eliminate six suspects until there's only one person standing. We decided early on in the process of breaking these stories that that wasn't going to be very satisfying, and it might be more fun to wipe the slate a little bit with a big moment.

TVF: How long did you know Red John would be Bertram, kind of the last man standing? Was this known a long time ago or was it kind of more recent that you decided that he's the one?

JH: Well, Bruno Heller [series creator] is a mysterious man even to us sometimes. Who's going to say that? But it's the difference between what Bruno knows and what I know and then what the crew outside the writers’ room knows, and a lot of times very different things. I mean, the level of information that we have. But Bruno Heller thinks big.

TVF: So we know at the end of the episode, Bertram does get away again. What can you tease about the next step? Also, because the group is disbanded at the end of the episode is that going to make Jane’s job easier, because he can go underground a little bit more?

JH: I'll tell you this. I said this in a different form earlier today, but I really saw this episode as the middle part of the trilogy or a three-part episode. So when I set out to write it, I thought it was the best middle part of the trilogy [and] you can always say The Empire Strikes Back.  That's the episode I chose as my model for this episode, because I wanted to write the Empire Strikes Back of The Mentalist. So that means that we really come out of this episode at about as low a point as we're going to get in a lot of ways.

Is Jane freed by having the CBI shut down? Well, maybe a little bit, but he also uses that law enforcement backing that he's depended on for so long. I want to be clear. We're not messing around. We're not pulling a lot of tricks on the audience. We moved Janes' couch out of that building. Hopefully with the crew and the cast filming that scene, it was a big scene and I hope it resonates with the audience. This is not entirely going to Janes' plan at this point.

TVF: With the couch and then he breaks his favorite cup. It's like, ‘Oh my God. What's happening?’

JH: I want to give Simon [Baker] credit, because the cup breaking was his idea. Our names go on these scripts like we wrote them, but nobody writes a TV script by themselves. You can always count on Simon to add things like that. That was a great touch.

TVF: What will we see as far as the unit? Is everybody going to kind of be going rogue?

JH: Yes.  Well, I'll put it this way, we are not done bumping heads with Rockmond Dunbar, [who plays] Dennis Abbott.

TVF: How long is Smith going to be safe, because he's kind of spilled the beans?

JH: I guess that depends on how long the reach of the Blake Association is. If we can get him into a federal prison on the East Coast, maybe it doesn't reach that far and maybe it does. But at this point, he's desperate enough. He knows he's not going to live in Sacramento for very much longer.

TVF: Now, a little bit outside the Red John story because I’ve had a lot of fans tweet me about Cho and his love life. Is the poor guy even going to get a good date in the near future? He could use a little happy!

JH: He certainly could. I think we can all agree that Cho as a character would benefit from a little good loving. I'm not sure how good his taste in women is. We'll have to find out.

TVF: We also know that Rigsby and Van Pelt are leaving by the end of the season or, I should say, the actors are planning to be leaving. When will we start seeing the seeds of that departure or are we already seeing them and maybe don't recognize them?

JH: I would say that the seeds are being planted right now. Everything that unfolds is going to not come out of left field. It just mixed like two metaphors there. You know what I mean.

TVF: I knew what you meant. When the writers think about taking regular characters and knowing that they're leaving soon, are you far enough ahead to think about not really replacing them but I’d guess you'll want to bring some new cast members in. Is that something you guys are even thinking about yet or is that too soon for that? [Ironically, the news just broke after this conversation that Emily Swallow would be a series regular once she starts appearing on December 1.]

JH: Yeah. We're going to need new people. Obviously, we cannot replace Owain Yeoman and Amanda Righetti. They're both fantastic and I've had a lot of fun with them. I wrote the Rigsby's dad episodes so I particularly have a real fondness for Rigsby's character. Amanda's great, too, and you can't replace them but there will be new people coming around. There are some of whom you've already met.

TVF: From a writer's perspective, are you and the writers able to do things now that you haven't been able to do yet with this story? Even the way to wrap it up? Like just some different things you have never done with the show before?

JH: Absolutely. It's really been freeing in a lot of ways. Again, as a TV fan myself, I'm always a big fan of when shows make decisions, they can't really take them back and will change it forever. Yeah. I won't speak about it at all, other than the episode I'm working on now is not like any other episode that I've ever done and it's a lot of fun.

TVF: When this final chapter of Red John ends, is Jane going to be in like a good place? Or is what's coming going to just change him even more?

JH:  Well, that's something that's definitely going to be explored and in that sense coming up. That's all I can think to say about that.
